Hello

My passion is helping people become the best student they can be through accelerating subject expertise and learning specific metacognitive skills. I have taught and tutored math for over 25 years. My degree in Astrophysics from UC Berkeley uniquely qualifies me to tutor math, for only through a physics degree does one experience years of rigorous calculus, linear algebra and differential equations. I intentionally attended San Jose State University in order to teach college students and because SJSU allowed me to take extensive linear algebra and statistics courses. I have over 15 years of experience teaching college-level math as a tenured math professor at Los Medanos College. I have taught at Milpitas High School and at several for-profit and non-profit math institutes. I am highly skilled at teaching all levels of mathematics.

Masterful tutoring requires more than knowledge and the ability to teach math. It requires empathy and the ability to connect. Ultimately, an exemplary tutor must grow a student's confidence in their abilities by giving them the tools necessary for scholastic success. I have years of affective training from AVID, The Academy for College Excellence, and the Jose Valdes Summer Math Institute. As I tutor math, I also teach how to do homework, how to engage homework after it's finished and how to study for exams. These are considered the "hidden curriculum" of school and I pull the curtain back.

I have extensive experience working with neurodivergent individuals, people who are gifted, and students strongly struggling with life's challenges. I actively work within our LGBTQ and gender fluid community. I have experience tutoring and teaching individuals from China, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Tonga, Peru, El Salvador, Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, Ghana, Nigeria and Ethiopia. I have years of experience working within our Latino and African American communities.

 

​I have spent decades in education learning, growing, and creating. I have now come full circle as I return to my first passion, tutoring :)
