Solving Math Problem

Less is More
< = >

I have distilled the major preparatory concepts for Calculus 1 into a one hour, 15 minute lecture. The goal of The Program is to have students apply the concepts with flexibility and confidence. This requires intentionality, concision and repetition. The Program is divided into four sections.

A student who completes The Program will learn the following Topics:

  • Master Linear Functions (30 hours)

Delve deeply into the interrelation between linear graphs, tables, word problems and algebraic equations. Learn how to "solving for x"  and end with a graphical and algebraic exploration of functional notation.

  • Become Proficient with Logarithmic and Exponential Functions (30 hours)

Learn exponential functions using a unique and elegant technique. Learn logarithms as exponential's inverse, briefly study its "parent" graph, and engage algebraically. Conclude with rigorous word problems.

  • Master Key Elements of Quadratic and Trigonometric Functions (30 hours)

Explore quadratics graphically through a word problem, then extrapolate to all representations. Focus on factoring and distributing, ending with the quadratic formula. Transition into trigonometry by memorizing the Unit Circle, polar transformations and identities, and end with graphing.

  • Review and Test! (30 hours)

Review is built into The Program from the second class. After six hours of class, review for six hours. Review for six hours after every Topic. Upon completion of all Topics, review for 12 hours, then again for six hours, then again for six hours. Conclude with one last review and a test. Repetition is key. Less is more!

The material becomes more challenging throughout the course. We travel as a tribe, but should your child become unable to continue, they may join again either during the summer sessions or the following semester. I charge by the hour, so there is no risk of "losing money" should your child be unable to continue. Every hour spent with me will empower and and accelerate your child mathematically.

College level Calculus 1 is challenging. It requires a Growth Mindset, Grit and preparatory knowledge. When your child completes The Program and performs satisfactorily on my test, they will then take Calculus 1. I will advise more time with me if your child completes the class yet is missing concepts.

When your child takes Calculus 1 from a local community college or online university such as the Univeristy of New England, I offer the option of joining a group tutoring experience. Tutoring will be multi-tiered:

  1. Learn how to successfully engage the material

  2. Lean how to understand concepts

  3. Lean how to master concepts

  4. Receive homework support

  5. Learn test preparation
